Trying to engage their fans beyond the broadcast show, USA Network has partnered with Juice Wireless to help promote their fifth season of the reality show 'Nashville Star'.
JuiceCaster is a service that empowers users to immediately post photos and video that they take with their mobile phones online. Their asking the 10 finalist in the series to record or capture the experience they're having in the competition.
From there the content will screened by the network and then posted online or delivered to mobile phones of the fans that want it.
How it will work is a fan can go to the "Nashville Star" Web site and subscribe to the MediaBox channel of whatever contestant they want. Once they're subscribed they will then be notified through text-messages when the contestants upload new content. The content can be viewed either from the mobile phone screen or online in their MediaBoxes.
A number of media companies are going this route of offering 'controlled' user-generated content to ride the trend wave. I'll be interesting to see if fans embrace this style of content or prefer more direct control.
