Time Warner (TWX) via its HBO network has now launched a subscription-based video on demand service in Britain which will feature programs like "Six Feet Under" and "The Sopranos." The newly created UK firm Virgin Media, BT Vision and Tiscali TV will offer the service. As of launch there will 50 hours of programming to start with, while being updated weekly.
"HBO's programming has always done very well in the UK and the arrival of an HBO service has been long desired and anticipated," Simon Sutton, President, Programming Distribution and International of HBO, said.
Richard Branson and his Virgin Media just started up last week from a merger of cable operators Telewest, NTL and Virgin's mobile phone unit.
BT Vision says that they believe the deal could attract up to 3 million subscribers.
HBO said that distributors are the ones who will decide when the official launch dates will be determined. HBO shows are already available on British television, but not on any on-demand services there.
