Spike TV with its predominately male audience has entered into the competitive eating business as it has made a deal with Major League Eating to broadcast four major competitive events this year, beginning with "MLE: St. Patrick's Day Chowdown" on March 17.
This will be Spike TVs first entry into the competitive eating market, following others like ESPN, Discovery Channel and MTV, who had offered different competitions in the past. For Major League Eating it is their first multievent deal they've entered into with a network.
"Guys are hungry for new and exciting sports on television that satisfy their craving for gut-busting action," Spike TV general manager Kevin Kay said. "Spike TV is proud to be the new television home of competitive eating."
For the first event of the agreement on St. Patrick's Day, competitors will include "Humble" Bob Shoudt, Takeru Kobayashi, Joey "Jaws" Chestnut and Sonya "The Black Widow" Thomas.
Food included in the contest will be cabbage, corned beef and yummy beef tongue. Those who make it to the final round will be able to have some green donuts.
The times that Spike will air the same-day tape of the event will be from 7-8 p.m.
