In a bizarre encounter between a so-called human rights group called Human Rights First and the writers of Fox's "24," they got together to discuss that the way it's shown on "24" isn't realistic and they want it to be more authentic.
Their complaint? The torture is being shown as being done in a way that gets results too quickly, while normally it would take weeks, if not months to break the subjects. I'm not kidding you, this is their actual concern.
"We're not opposed to having torture on television, but 98% of the time when it is shown it's 'Bing, bang, boom,' and it works," said David Danzig, director of the Prime Time Torture Project for the New York-based organization Human Rights First. "Frankly, it's unrealistic and it's kind of boring."
I'm not even sure why the studio would waste their time with something like this, but they chose to. Does anybody care? This is entertainment, not the real world - but the reel world.
Howard Gordon, the executive producer of "24" said, "The meeting was an eye-opener, we hadn't really thought a lot about torture as anything more than a dramatic device."
Do you want to know why you didn't think of it Howard? Because normal people would think of it as a dramatic device.
I think I know the answer to all of this. Get Jack Bauer to investigate this group of people and find out why they have so much time on their hands. Bring them to C.T.U.
In the meantime, I want my torture scenes quick and the answers provided for me right away. If I want reality, I'll watch "American Idol."
