Hearing the rumblings of discontent among its core fans, and after a three-month break, "Lost" is returning Wednesday with promises that changes are in store very quickly. There will be sixteen new episodes offered with no breaks and in a new time slot "10 p.m. ET/PT" to keep it away from "Idol" competition.
As most know, the show started of this year will the focus on "The Others" and Jack (Matthew Fox), Kate (Evangeline Lilly) and Sawyer (Josh Holloway) being kidnapped and the story centering around them. Many fans rebelled around the exclusion of their favorites like Hurley, Charlie, Claire, Sun and Sayid.
ABC (DIS) promises that after the first episode, the story will return to the beach on February 14 and fans will see all their favorites again. The network added that after February 21, the story on The Others will be taken off of their island.
"Seeing The Others was great, especially with the surprise beginning, that they have this cozy village, and the Lostaways have interrupted their seemingly idyllic life," says Matthew Hoskins, 32, of Orlando. "But keeping the first six episodes so Others-centric was a detriment to the character development of the Lostaways still on the beach."
Lost of course had the luxury and difficulty in creating so many characters that people relate to, that to wind the story in a compelling way that includes them all resulted in the strained loyalties from various fan quarters.
With numbers dropping, it shows that while the network has created a great show, it also is difficult for casual viewers to stay up on what is happening in all the complexities and interactions that core the fans love.
The show should do well again, but probably not reach the numbers it has in the past.
With an average of 17.8 million viewers for the first six shows in the fall, it dropped by almost 20 percent from the same weeks in 2005, when they took in their highest numbers at 22 million, while winning an Emmy. If it can hang on to its viewers in the key demo 18-49, which they ranked fifth in, they should be around for a while. The true believers hope they will. How about you?
