Rupert Murdoch announced that other than the upcoming launch of the Fox Business Channel, there will no new cable channels upcoming for News Corp. (NWS-A). He thinks that they may have reached the limit of the amount they can carry.
He was referring to general coverage, as he added that if there are any new channels, they will be niche channels rather than broader channels trying to find larger audiences. "We have about as many channels as we need," he said.
One example of that strategy is the Big Ten Channel that is set to launch in
August, and in which News Corp. is a partner. It will focus only on the nation's top sports conference and nothing else.
For the business channel, News Corp. is taking a more unusual approach as it is going to take a more serious and positive look at business, rather than the more negative, sensationalism offerd by CNBC. When you think of Fox, you would think that sensationalism would be part of the mix, but according to Murdoch, they're not going to go that route.
For me I hope that continue with their purpose, as it would be refreshing to actually get some quality business news without all the continuous focus on the negative that makes business look much worse than it really is.
But like they found out with their recent MyNetworkTV failure, when people aren't watching it, you change it until you find those that will. So there's really no certainty here at all. It will be interesting to see how much they're able to carve out of their existing two competitors, which also includes Blomberg.
Neil Cavuto will be the main news host for the network.
