Film buffs decided that fright was what they wanted this weekend as the film "The Messengers" debuted at the number one spot at the weekend box office, taking in $14.5 million. It's based on the familiar story of an urban family moving to a haunted house in the country.
Debuting in the second spot for the weekend was the comedy "Because I Said So," starring Diane Keaton and Mandy Moore, the comedy about the friction between a mother and daughter. It took in an estimated $13 million for the weekend.
Last weeks' number one offering, "Epic Movie" dropped to third place in its second time around, bringing in an additional $8.2 million to increase its 10-day total to $29.4 million.
The horror genre continues to perform well for Sony (SNE), who seems to have developed the strategy successfully, as the low-budget films continue to make money for them.
For the weekend the total was down by a large 12.5 percent from the same time period last year.
