According to Comcast (CMCSA) Chairman and Chief Executive Brian Roberts, the company has no intention of offering straight cash deals in lieu of the right to retransmit broadcast television signals.
Roberts added that even though other companies have been making such deals, Comcast's interests remain on involve deals involving exchanges of "some kind of approximate value." He's referring mostly to advertising time here or in some cases, other forms of compensation for television retransmission rights that doesn't involve cash.
When asked about CBS (CBS-A) CEO Les Mooves' recent statement that he's signed cash retransmission deals with smaller cable companies recently, and looks
to do the same with larger cable firms, Roberts just laughed.
Talking about "pure independent broadcasters" Roberts said that "we think we can get a deal that involves something other than cash ... something that won't force us to increase costs to consumers, or charge for free TV."
While not saying with what company, Roberts said that there will be an announcement soon on a retransmission deal in the works.
