Hollywood producer John Daly, who has been the executive producer for "The Terminator," and other movies, along with Erick Hansen from Blue Ray Techonlogies Inc. have created a new company to offer the high definition Blu-ray digital format - which is backed by Sony (SNE) - to independent film and video makers.
The new company called Edge of Light Media is the lastest salvo in the war to see which of the two new high definition formats will become the standard of the industry. Their competitor is HD-DVD backed by Toshiba Corporation.
The Blue-ray technology has only just begun to be released into homes, and offers a higher quality video experience and increases space for more extras on the disk, in comparison to regular DVDs.
This will be a boost for indie producers, as they don't have the finances to release a movie in Blu-ray format. It's important for independents because they rely on the DVD market as a big part of their revenue. "It is a solution for indies, because they can't raise the money to have a big Blu-ray release," Hansen told Reuters.
With no one technology becoming dominant in the marketplace, this is another attempt to try to bring the Blu-ray format into that position through the creation of the company.
The newly-created company will be headquarterd in Los Angeles with a facility for manufacturing and distribution based in Spokane, Washington.
