When United Artists acquired the rights to a project that would deal with an attempted assassination of Adolf Hitler last week, it had no intention of having Tom Cruise star in the film. All that has changed now as the film's director, Bryan Singer was fascinated with the idea that Cruise play the role of the key figure in the story, and consquently offered him the role. Cruise accepted and signed on Tuesday to play the part.
For Cruise and business partner Paula Wagner, this is the second project they've accepted since they took over United Artists last year. The first was "Lions for Lambs," which is directed by Robert Redford and set for release on November 9.
Writing the script were Christopher McQuarrie ("The Usual Suspects") and Nathan Alexander. The project has no title yet, but is set to begin production early this summer.
