The Fox tandem of "American Idol" and "House" demolished the competition for another night as usual, with the major networks only doing the rerun thing and not even trying to compete.
On the other hand, I think that the CW looks at this as an opportunity to gain ground on some of its rivals. They offered the new "Pussycat Dolls Present: The Search for the Next Doll," which actually did pretty well against the other networks besides Fox (NWS-A).
CW began the night with its "Gilmore Girls," which did pretty well with a 2.0/5 in the 18-49 key demo. For the "Pussycat Dolls" they took in a 1.7/4 in the 18-49. Not bad for the first night. It helped CW to beat out ABC for the fourth-place position on the night.
For "Idol" they finished up with 10.9/29, down a little from last year, but still a strong showing. "House" came in with a 9.6/24 finish, helping the network to top off at 10.3/27 for the evening. For "House" is was a 15 percent increase in ratings over last year.
For NBC and CBS (CBS-A), they fought for the second spot with NBC (GE) taking a 2.3/6 with their rerun of "Law & Order: SVU finishing at 2.8/8. CBS came in at 2.2/6 overall, with their top show being a rerun of "NCIS" with a 2.6/7.
ABC (DIS) finished in 5th with a 1.85, with their top show being "Primetime: The Outsiders," which ended at 2.2/6.
I wonder if any of the networks will respond differently if the CW continues to make headway against them?
