The online video venture between News Corp. (NWS-A) and NBCU (GE) will be distributed mainly through comcast.net (CMCSA) and fancast.com, the companies announced.
Comcast will also offer up non-exclusive content to the site, which will include Style, E!, Golf Channel and Versus.
On the technology side the companies said they will use thePlatform, Inc., which is a subsidiary of Comcast, for their management and video distribution needs.
"We're delighted that the nation's largest cable provider will be a major player in this new venture," said Peter Chernin, president and chief operating officer of
News Corp. "News Corp. and NBC have long histories with Comcast and we're committed to expanding our relationship in this new media universe. We believe there are a wealth of opportunities to exploit broadband distribution to benefit both our businesses."
Jeff Zucker, president and CEO, of NBC Universal, along with Steve Burke, COO of Comcast both added taht they are excited about the possibilities that the growing partnerships are offering.
I, for one, am looking forward to see how all of this will play out in reference to their chief competitor, YouTube (GOOG). It should get pretty interesting to see if the traditional media companies will be able to make a dent in the YouTube trend, or if they simply end up creating a bigger online video market.
