Richard Gere has an arrest warrant out for him for the "obscene act" of kissing Shilpa Shetty publicly earlier in the month. Gere could face 3 months in prison or a fine; possibly both.
Not only did Gere get in trouble, but Shetty has been ordered by the judge to appear in Jaipur court on May 5 to defend her lack of action in resisting Gere's advances.
"I understand this is his culture, not ours. But this was not such a big thing or so obscene for people to overreact in such manner," she told the Press Trust of India news agency last week.
Some outraged Hindu groups have burned posters of Gere and Shetty in effigy as they view it as an extreme insult to Indian culture and an attack upon the modesty of Shetty.
Judge Dinesh Gupta viewed video footage of the incident and said that the "highly sexually erotic" actions performed by the two "transgressed all limits of vulgarity."
When you think of the venue and country this happened in, it wasn't that bright on Gere's part. He was at a HIV/AIDS awareness summit in New Delhi, trying to help drum up awareness of Aids prevention among the countries truck drivers.
Taking into account the conservative beliefs of the country and the issue at hand, doing this was simply stupid by Gere. Now the entire purpose of the event is completely overshadowed by his actions. And he could have done a lot of damage to Shetty as well.
