Jeff Zucker has said that one of his top priorities for growth at NBC Universal (GE) is its international markets. In response to that strategy, the company is rolling out 20 new pay-television channels in 23 countries across 3 different continents - Latin America, Europe and Asia. They hope to double the revenue of its global television division within three years.
They began the process by now airing the Universal Channel, Sci-Fi and 13th Street in new international markets for the first time.
Peter Smith, NBC Universal's international president said that "We've got two opportunities: firstly, to extend the footprint and secondly, to extend within the existing markets, [it] will build more scale in our brands."
It began with the Sci-Fi channel airing in Central in South America yesterday, and will continue with 13th Street in the Netherlands. Some of the other markets
they're expanding to beyond these already noted are Poland, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Portugal, India, Russia and Turkey.
Long-term the company is looking beyond simply "exporting its content," said Smith. They are looking to embrace more locally produced content within countries the company is marketing to.
