Clients of Nielsen Media Research received their first official estimate of the size of the DVR penetration in the U.S. marketplace.
The size of the overall market was a bit larger than currently expected, as the existing number of U.S. DVR households was thought to be around 15.8 percent, when in reality the estimate is now higher at around a 17.2 percent market penetration.
Of the local markets, the Dallas-Fort Worth area has the largest percentage of
DVRs in their homes, coming in at 26.5 percent. Los Angeles was the second highest market with 25.9 percent of households owning DVRs. The San Francisco-Oakland-San Jose market was in third place in the U.S. with 23.5 percent mark. Washington D.C. followed up in fourth place with 23 percent owning the devices.
While ad agencies and companies are resisting using this type of data to change their buying plans, it will be interesting to see if individual markets across the U.S. have ad money distributed differently based upon these percentages.
