The numbers for the opening episode of the last half season of "The Sopranos" shows that the network is doing the right thing in bringing the series to an end. Numbers for the second-half premiere were down by around 2 million from the premiere of the first half, taking in only 7.7 million on Sunday night.
The premiere in the first half of the season had an average viewership of 9.5 million, while on Sundays they averaged 8.6 million.
Following Sopranos was "Entourage" which was able to retain almost half of the Sopranos audience which brought it up in comparison to the first half premiere, drawing an audience of 3.8 million. That was up from the 2.7 million they had from the first half start.
Another show that performed below expectations was ABC's (DIS) "Desperate Housewives" which aired to the smallest audience of an original episode ever. They averaged 15.9 million at 9 p.m.
