"The Sadhu (The Holy Man)" with Nicolas Cage to be Shot in India

The upcoming film project starring Nicolas Cage, if nothing else is fascinating based on the unique parties involved with the project. The film will be named "The Sadhu (The Holy Man)," and will begin filming in India in the early part of 2008.

Whose working on the script for the movie? None other than self-improvement guru Deepak Chopra. It will be directed by Shekhar Kapur, a filmmaker from India. Producing the show will be the chief creative officer of Virgin Comics, Gotham Chopra, who is the son of Deepak.

The film will be based upon a comic book series about an English soldier who is seeking revenge against the man who killed his family.

So you have Virgin Comics, which is a partnership between Richard Branson, Deepak Chopra and Kapur producing the film. Nicolas Cage will be starring as the solder who now is a mystical figure seeking revenge. Deepak Chopra writing the script and Shekhar Kapur directing. To me it's one of the most unique grouping of individuals put together to make a film.

Talking about Cage, Gotham Chopra said "We sat down and talked to him about India and sadhus. The story is very much set here and everybody including Nick loves the idea of shooting it in India.""Nick chose Shekhar to direct the film.

"The sadhu is an iconic character. He is an Indian equivalent of the samurai. He is the spiritual warrior of the mind."

If Nicolas Cage is going to star in that movie, then you can be sure that it would be filled with a load of action, fun and worth waiting for.

Sadhu are not like samurai, they're monks, not warriors. The comic series as well as the movie should be called Kshatriya if they want something about indian samurai. It looks as if someone only made a token effort at researching sadhus, to the point that the people making this sound like they don't even know what they're talking about, or at least like they've taken drastic artistic liscense to the point of glaring inaccuracy. To be honest, I can see many of the hindu faith, particularly those living in the west, being able to enjoy this movie anyway, but I think just as many of the more traditional of the faith, particularly those of the more traditional and austere Shaivite sect (look it up, it might be the most research done involving this movie) will be annoyed my the misinterpretation of sadhus. Who knows, all else considerred this could turn out to be an otherwise good movie, and maybe the series refers to a more obscure sect of sadhus, but I still say sadhu are not landed vassel knights like samurai, and they are not warriors, the Kshatriya caste is both of those things, and they should have named the series Kshatriya if they wanted something about indian samurai.
