Last year at this time the overall box office finished strong with the debut of Ice Age: The Meltdown, which took in $68 million on its own, and helped the total for the weekend to climb to $127.1 million. While this year didn't reach close to that, it still had a pretty solid weekend earning $111.4 million.
Leading the way was the comedy "Blades of Glory" which brought in $33 million opening at 3,372 screens. It brought in an average of $9,786 which is good for a comedy.
"Meet the Robinson's" came in second place drawing $25.1 million, which was in the range of $25 - $30 million which most expected. For this time of the year that isn't too bad, but it has to be a little disappointing to Disney. It may have some staying power though and that may give more long-term success.
Finishing up in third place is "300," still going strong, but probably about to slow down. It earned $11.2 million which is down by 44 percent from last week. It's now taken in $179.7 million, and will probably reach the $200 million mark domestically.
