America's largest cable operator Comcast (CMCSA) has been in negotiations with Hollywood studios to offer movies the same day as their releases in theaters.
If a deal is ever made, Comcast says they will charge between $30 to $50 to watch a movie on opening day.
The price is possibly some type of concession to theater owners who have bitterly opposed the idea saying that narrowing the window between theatrical and DVD releases could potentially drive down attendance.
Studios like the idea because with the majority of their profits coming from DVD releases, it would cut back on marketing costs by eliminating the need for another campaign to promote the DVD later on.
This is a new development as the former focus has been primarily on decreasing the time between when a DVD would go to a retailer, not being offered as a pay-
per-view option.
Comcast Chief Operating Officer Stephen Burke said, "Everybody's looking at new windows. We've talked to the studios about this and they're all interested."
