DirecTV (DTV) is looking at experimenting with a high-speed Internet service delivered through power lines in a top 50 U.S. city sometime in 2008, said CEO Chase Carey.
Carey added that they aren't the only company seeking out this possibility, "We're not the only ones talking to them. I think you'll see some meaningful tests in this arena."
A lot of analysts and shareholders have been wondering how the satellite TV providers would continue to grow, as the market reaches the saturation point.
Most think that offering broadband services would be the way to stay competitive with their cable rivals. The battle between cable operators and phone companies has been a positive development for satellite companies, making it a feasible
strategy they could employ.
Fellow satellite company Echostar (DISH) could also be the target of AT&T (T), who had looked at DirecTV as a possible purchase in 2003.
Liberty Media will be taking over DirecTV before 2008 with the deal between them and Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. (NWS-A).
