ESPN (DIS) has partnered with Gas Station TV to give you another place where you can get your sports information.
If you can't wait to get to where you're going, now you'll be able to get your sports news while you're pumping your gas. Initially ESPN will provide Gas Station TV with one segment a day, with plans to create numerous segments daily in the future.
The service has been initially rolled out in Dallas, Houston and Atlanta, with 1,000 pumps having the screens installed. Next month they will be put in New York, Chicago and Los Angeles too. Some other cities scheduled for the service are Detroit, Boston, Philadelphia and San Francisco; among others.
At this time the majority of gas stations offering the service are owned by Murphy USA and are located at Wal-Mart (WMT) stores.
The business is based upon an ad model, and the screens provided free to the gas stations. Including the commercials, the broadcast will run between 4 and 4 1/2 minutes, with about 1 1/2 minutes of that being advertising. Actual broadcast clips will run for about 45 seconds each.
By the end of the year the companies expect to have around 6,000 screens installed across the country, which will include 14 markets. Customers will be able to view a 20 inch LCD screen while they're watching.
