The figures we're talking about today are for the entire Memorial Day weekend totals, so they'll be a lot larger than the normal three-day weekend we usually show the figures on.
With the four and a half days it was shown, "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End" finished with a total of $156.1 million, the largest Memorial Day weekend opening in history.
To keep things in perspective though, when Disney (DIS) decided to go for the four-day record, rather than the normal three-day weekend, they had to know there was no way they were going to beat the three-day record set by Spider-Man 3 so they did an earlier release so they could have the bragging rights to the Memorial Day record.
For Shrek the Third, it came in second with an estimated 69.1 million for the weekend, showing that it may be starting to fade. Still, it's strong enough to make money for the studio.
Spider-Man 3 is starting to drop quickly as it was only able to bring in a mere $18 million, bringing its overall total to $307.6 million.
All of this is showing me that some of the general concerns that the continuous release of big pictures may cannibalize each other during their runs, and it seems that is coming true.
The upcoming releases in June should really be interesting to watch how they perform after such a fast, expected start for the summer.
One amazing, unexpected result was "Wild Hogs" coming back into the top ten after it was expected to finally disappear. It finished at No. 10.
The top ten for the four-day weekend:
| 1 | Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End | 156.1 |
| 2 | Shrek the Third | 69.1 |
| 3 | Spider-Man 3 | 18.0 |

| 7 | Disturbia | 2.4 |
| 8 | Georgia Rule | 2.4 |
