"Spider-Man 3" put smiles on the face of Sony (SNE) executives as it beat Spider-Man 1 + 2 openers with a take of $29.15 million to start its run.
In a number of countries it took in record opening amounts, like France, Hong Kong, South Korea and Italy.
"`Spider-Man' is a worldwide franchise, and the thing we're most excited about is that in two pretty completely separate parts of the world we've gotten off to a great start," Jeff Blake, Sony vice chairman, said Wednesday. "We certainly hope for the same in North America."
France led the way for the opening weekend with the French paying out $6.8 million to watch the webslinger. That was a record for the country. Germany followed with $4.6 million, while Italy came in third with a $4 million take.
The blockbuster is set to be released in numerous countries in the next few days, with its release in the United States coming on Friday.
