Spider-Man 3 Plunges, Rest of Box Office Does Nothing

There was no doubt that Spider-Man 3 would finish No. 1 for the weekend, the question was how much it would drop over its first frame. Among the top openers of all time, it has dropped higher than most. X-Men: The Last Stand, dopped by 67 percent on its second time around to do worse, but Spidey dropped a huge 60 percent to be among the top plunges of huge openers in recent history.

The film took in a respectable $60 million over the weekend to bring its overall take to $242.1 million. With that large of a drop it missed its chance to become the fastest film in history to reach the $200 million mark, as it had a slow week with school still being in session.

It looks like some of the concerns about the film may be coming to pass as another big question mark was whether it was compelling enough to get people to go and see it again. It seems that they aren't. With Shrek 3 in the wings, people may start to forget it sooner than later.

Coming in second place was the Zombie film, 28 Weeks Later, a continuation of 28 Days Later. Even though it opened at about double the theaters of the original, it was only able to reach the same opening numbers of $10 million.

Georgia Rule with Lindsay Lohan and Jane Fonda wasn't able to gain any traction, only able to reach the $5.9 million mark in its opener. This had to be disappointing to Universal as it was supposedly counter-programming.

While the industry will be able to boast that this weekend was bigger than last year's numbers, in reality it has to be pretty disappointing. It wasn't the drop of Spidey, which was expected, but that nothing else at all grabbed the attention of people. The industry needs secondary films to at least perform decently to make the year what they hoped it would be. It didn't happen this weekend.

After watching spider man 3 i felt like i should have watched 28 weeks later. Spider man is now more of a hype and media frenzy then anything else.
