Disney (DIS) is about to go interactive with their new video-on-demand service which they will debut toward the end of the month.
They will be offering "Disney's Travel on Demand" service to about 9 million subscribers through Cablevision (CVC) and Timer Warner Cable (TWC).
With Cablevision users, they will be given the opportunity to use their remote to request a representative from Disney to call them within 15 minutes. It will air on its own Cablevision station, Channel 650.
For Time Warner, subscribers can request more information with their remotes which can be sent by email, or other means, concerning destinations they're interested in. It can be seen as part of Time Warner's Journey TV.
"People are going to follow it carefully to see what the results are," said Will Richmond, president of market research firm Broadband Directions. "It feels like a very mainstream-oriented initiative that they're pursuing, which may be different from some of the others in the past. What they're doing is really going straight into the heart of Middle America."
This is one of the few things I've seen that could potentially compete with the Internet ... as far as interactive capabilities and service go.
The majority of people won't care whether they're ordering something with a remote or a computer mouse. If it works out for Disney, they'll probably roll it out in a way that you could access it on your mobile or other platforms as well.
