In a move reminiscent of the time Disney (DIS) united ESPN, ABC and the Disney Channel into one unit, the Mouse is now looking to do the same by creating an international distribution unit.
The changes will involve a number of divisions from Disney-ABC Worldwide Television and Walt Disney Studios being brought together under one roof. Responsibility for the new unit will go to long-time Disney veteran Ben Pyne.
With Disney CEO Robert Iger seeing the international market as a vital part of the long-term growth of the company, he looked to the past model to improve communications and speed to that end.
"This new position, this new group, marks an evolution of our global distribution efforts," said Anne Sweeney, co-chairwoman of Disney Media Networks and president of Disney-ABC Television Group. "We're combining all of these different divisions into one global unit, under one person, to create a much more streamlined, strategic group."
This is a real good move as the international market is growing extremely fast and requires a more streamlined organization to be able to respond quickly and efficiently to changing market conditions.
It reminds me of the way Jack Welch developed tremendous communcations strategies so what General Electric GE) needed to do was communicated across the gigantic organization.
Another value is Disney's partners will also be able to communicate much easier with the company, making it easier to do business with.
Pyne said one of the strategies he wants to employ is taking what is working in the U.S. market and multiply that across various international markets.
If this is executed properly, it helps Disney to position themselves for a strong push into the emerging international market. It seems another good move, in a series of good moves, that will carry Disney to heights it hasn't reached before. Their racing ahead on all cylinders.
