Other than professional football, the other major sports championships have all dropped to their lowest level of ratings in their history on television.
For the recently completed NBA Finals, they ended up with a 5.6 rating, down 34 percent from last year's finals.
While some of that will be attributed to the size of the market of a series, it can't be the only factor, as past series have has smaller market teams in them. Still, with the NBA Finals, these were to lowest ranked market teams in NBA history.
But then you have to consider Baseball, which had the same experience in the last World Series is played. They finished with only a 10.1 rating and 4.9 in the key demo 18-49.
The NHL Stanley Cup hockey playoffs experienced the same thing, getting their lowest ratings in their history also.
American Football on the other hand doesn't seem to stop growing in numbers, as it drew its best numbers in over 10 years: 91.1 million.
I'm wondering if the professional sports have become so localized in interest that they will no longer be able to draw big numbers? All the leagues have spread themselves across the country, and in most sports - North America.
The salary caps now in place also keep things so even, that the super great teams that can draw larger interest and crowds are diminishing.
The problem now is that any market-sized team can get into a leagues playoffs now with the rules now in place. While it may generate local interest and make the team stronger fiscally, it could be at the expense of the national interest.
Other than Football, it seems there aren't near the nationwide fans that used to exist. Most people will pick the team of their choice in Football, whether it's near their home town or state. It doesn't seem to happen as much in the other sports anymore.
I'm wondering what the leagues will do when the new contracts are negotiated if it keeps trending this way?

As a sports fan, I can see why these TV ratings are dropping. What most people used to watch live on TV is now available in so many other formats ... and there are simply so many other distractions nowadays. I wouldn't be surprised if the very nature of major sports leagues changes drastically over the next 20 years - seasons, games, teams, players, everything.
