For the fifth weekend in a row, the third in a sequel of film franchises finished in the No. 1 spot. While Ocean's Thirteen never had a chance of reaching the heights of its predecessors, it was able to gross $37.1 million while showing in 3,565 venues. The gross for the film was down from the first two in the series, as Ocean's Eleven took in $38.1 million, while Ocean's Twelve was able to draw $39.2 million for its opener. This franchise looks like it's getting tired.
With an estimated weekend gross of $21.3 million, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End was able to come in second, probably for the last time, as it has fallen far further than its previous films. It now sits at $253.6 million, in contrast to the second film in the series, which sat at $321.9 million in the same time period.
Several things are contributing to the overall decline in the big movies so far this year. Part is that they are cannibalizing each other to a small degree. The other is the length of some of the, offering fewer showing than could have happened with shorter films. And last, they just haven't been as well made as the earlier films. There have been big numbers for some of them, but I think they're falling short of what is hoped for, as they're getting much fewer return visits than the earlier versions.
Knocked up took third place, holding pretty strongly as it earned about $20 million in its second time around, dropping only 35 percent. It will probably end up reaching about $125 million domestically, pretty good for having production costs of around $30 million.

I must admit I am surprised. Ocean's Twelve was so stupid and boring (I have yet to see the whole thing without falling asleep), I just knew there would not be another sequel. I can't believe people wanted to see another one! I suppose there is some major star power in this franchise and that could have a lot to do with its success. I'll wait to see it on cable. :-)
