The summer has taken on a predictable sequence of events as the blockbuster movies have started off big, but then the following weekend drop off the cliff. It happened again with this weekends second-time-around for "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End." It dropped a huge 62 percent, while still maintaining its No. 1 finish. It ended up with a little over $43 million.
Spider-Man 3 had the exact same numbers, as it also dropped by 62 percent. Shrek the Third did a little better, but not much, when it dropped by 56 percent in its sophomore weekend. Most of this is coming about because people aren't going to the movies to see them again. All three of the big movies so far this year have overall been considered of less quality than their predecessors.
Pushing its way into the No. 2 position this week was the R-rated comedy "Knocked Up," which earned a fairly strong $29.3 million from only 2,871 theaters. It had an average of $10,200 per theater; the best for any movie this weekend. With production costs of only $33 million, this should be a moneymaker for Universal.
Shrek the Third, took third for the weekend. It wasn't able to maintain its audience either as it dropped another 50 percent from last weekends drop of 56 percent. It brought in $26.7 million, to bring its overall total to $254.6 million.
The last blockbuster, Spider-Man 3, was only able to reach spot No. 5, as it will take in only about $7.5 million, which brings it domestic gross to $318.2 million.
