After its third time around, "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End" has now reached the $493.6 million mark in international sales, to bring it to the No. 15 position in overseas sales in history.
But one can't help but think that this is a disappointing figure for Disney (DIS). They had hopes of having at least $600 million in overseas sales for the film. With China being the last foreign market they're opening in, they will have a difficult time reaching that number.
From even before the domestic release, it seems the company received information that they weren't going to reach expected sales. That's the reason they changed start dates unexpectedly so they could shoot for a record that was achievable. They knew they weren't going to break the opening domestic weekend record, so they went for the Memorial Day record instead, which was pretty much guaranteed to be broken.
The competition is still strong also as "Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer" will release into 31 markets this weekend, which should cut deeply into "Pirates" weekend take.
While this isn't necessarily bad news, it is disappointing in that they had hopes of coming much closer to the success of "Pirates 2," which finished with $642 million in overall international sales.
Weekend overseas sales were still topped by "Pirates" as they finished with $51 million.
