A report from Magna Global USA says that within four years, DVR penetration in U.S. television households will reach 35 percent or 40.3 million homes. That's about double what is expected by the end of this year.
The estimates, according to Magna, include those at the cable head-end and those on individual set-top DVR units.
Another projection of the company, cited by Media Daily News, is Video on Demand will double in use during that same four-year time period, reaching into 62.8 million U.S. homes, which will equate to 54.3 percent of all U.S. households, while reaching almost 96 percent of all telco and cable subscribers. The agency says by the end of 2007, Video on Demand will reach 28.7 million TV households.
One of the largest beneficiaries of the video on demand growth should be Comcast (CMCSA) which now had 3.2 million DVR homes, or about 13.2 percent of its overall market. With broadband platforms being the leading digital on-demand distribution, Comcast should gain from this for these next several years. Broadband access should reach 92 million homes by the end of the next four years.
Magna adds that satellite TV providers Echostar (DISH) and DirecTV (DTV) should benefit greatly from the DVR phenomenon as well, with Echostar leading the way with 4.8 million DVR homes at this time, which equals 35.9 percent of all its subscribers. DirecTV has 4.2 million DVR homes which is 25.7 percent of their total subscribers.
