Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer rose to the Weekend box office No. 1 position in its opener. While that's not surprising, their performance surely was, as it generated $7 million more in revenue than expected by the studio, and far more than that which was expected by most critics. It finished with $57.4 million in its debut. That beat the original Fantastic Four, which brought in $56.1 million for its opener.
Last weeks No. 1 finisher, Ocean's Thirteen, held pretty strong as it dropped a pretty good 47% from its premiere, as it fell to the No. 1 position. It was able to gross another $19.1 million. It helped that no new adult film was introduced this weekend.
Knocked Up held on to its third place position, as it drew a pretty strong $14.5 million, only dropping an excellent 26%. It's now generated over $90 million.
For the third weekend in a row, the box office finished behind last year's total, even with a better-than-expected performance from Fantastic Four. It dropped about 4% from last year's total for the top 12, finishing with $138.8 million, in comparison to last year's $144.6 million.
