Ted Turner went on a smaller land-acquisition spree recently, as he bought another ranch, this one only 28,000 acres in the Nebraska Sandhills. Some of his past purchases have been for a lot larger parcels, as he also bought a ranch in the same Sandhills of 58,000 acres, and in Sheridan County a 45,000-acre ranch. Heck, this is just a sandbox to him.
Turner bought the land at a public auction in Cherry County, and has increased his acreage to almost 2 million, making him the largest private land owner in North America. His land holdings cross seven states. For this acreage he paid $9.5 million; $364 an acre.
While I'm sure Turner likes this for his ego, he actually does have a practical reason for buying the ranches: to raise a bison herd.
He's been quietly building a restaurant empire called Ted's Montana Grill - yee haw.
