Time Warner (TWX) is the largest media company in America, ranking no. 48 on the Fortune 500 for 2007. The Fortune 500 ranking of companies is based upon revenue.
That's actually a drop from last year's No. 40 ranking. This is in spite of an increase of revenue of 2.6 percent from last year. For profits, they were up by 125.5 percent.
The other leading media companies on the 2007 Fortune 500 list were: The Walt Disney Co. (DIS), finishing No. 64; News Corp. (NWS-A) wasn't too far behind them at No. 88; next was CBS (CBS-A) at No. 165; ranking No. 218 was Viacom (VIA-B); and Clear Channel Communications (CCU) finished in the No. 330 position.
This is an interesting list based upon revenue, but I would prefer a list that's based upon profits as well. The largest company in no way means the most profitable company. Still, this does reflect the health of large American businesses, and the media companies along with them.
