The German Defence Ministry announced on Monday that has forbidden Tom Cruise and his team to shoot a movie about a plot to kill Adolf Hitler because he is a Scientologist.
The religion is rejected by Germany, saying it "masquerades as a religion to make money." The German government doesn't recognize it as a church.
Defence Ministry spokesman Harald Kammerbauer said the film makers "will not be allowed to film at German military sites if Count Stauffenberg is played by Tom Cruise, who has publicly professed to being a member of the Scientology cult."
The true story is based on Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg, who made an
unsuccessful attempt to assassinate Hitler on July 20, 1944. He planted it under a table in a briefcase, but when it went off Hitler was only injured.
The film named "Valkyrie," after Operation Valkyrie, the actual name of the plan, is scheduled for a 2008 release.
Directing will be Bryan Singer and will co-star Kenneth Branagh.
