In what sounds like a really cool feature, Echostar Communications Corp. (DISH) is partnering with ESPN (DIS) to "create the U.S. Open Interactive TV (ITV) mosaic, a multiple picture-in-picture showcase of six distinct U.S. Open programming options, available to all of its 12 million ITV-enabled homes."
The six picture-in-picture channels will include coverage of Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods; interviews with players and officials; coverage of the Tournament Leaders, video archives of previous U.S. Open tournaments (The Vault); and a look at some of the best shots of the tournament.
Viewers can choose to watch all six of the channels at one time, or can choose the usual TV format. Users will be able to toggle between the two depending on what they want to view at the time.
"The DISH Network's U.S. Open ITV mosaic offers the most comprehensive golf coverage available, giving customers a unique viewing experience that allows them to quickly preview the distinct programming options and highlights available, and then watch on a full screen whichever interests them the most,'' said Eric Sahl,
senior vice president of Programming for DISH Network."
This could be a great service that viewers love. The only potential problem is how simple it is to use. If it's made too difficult, it could frustrate users and backfire on the providers. If it's done right, I think this will really be a hit.
