Warner Bros. has bought the rights to the popular fantasy writer Terry Brooks' "Shannara" book series.
This is pretty exciting to me, as after the "Lord of the Rings" series, it has been my favorite fantasy series.
Anybody that follows this knows that the original book in the series was "The Sword of Shannara," published in 1977 by Random House. The book was the first of its genre to reach the New York Times best-seller list, let alone eventually taking the No. 1 spot.
Word is that the second book of the series, "The Elfstones of Shannara," will probably be the place where the studio begins the big screen story.
This is one of those time when it's good news, but only if the series is done right. It's the type of story similar to "Lord of the Rings," which has an existing fan base. It has to be done in a way that will first appeal to their devotion to the story, and then go from there to reach a wider market.
Hopefully they'll get someone that likes "Shannara" as much as Peter Jackson liked "Lord of the Rings."
