Dan Patrick, who has been a fixture on ESPN's Sportscenter, anchoring the show from 1989-2006, says he's leaving the network after 18 years of service.
"I needed to exhale, to be able to breathe for once," he said. "Sometimes you suffocate yourself with a job and don't really realize it. I think that maybe is what I did."
Patrick has won the National Sportscaster of the Year award by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association in 2006, and also a Sports Emmy for studio host in 1998.
ESPN tried hard to keep the sportscaster on board, but Patrick would have none of that saying, "I said I won't look back. I'm doing it for the right reasons."
At this time, Patrick says he has nothing specific in mind with leaving the TV channel and radio show. He likes the idea that for the first time in 18 years he doesn't know exactly what he's going to do. The only hint he gave of his future was that he would still like to do radio because he loves the format so much.
