In a cameo appearance for the Los Angeles Galaxy soccer team, David Beckham was able to help ESPN (DIS) draw an average audience of 1.5 million viewers to become the largest audience viewing a Major League Soccer team on the channel.
Only able to play 16 minutes at the end of the game because of an ankle injury, the telecast still drew the highest total for men in the key 18-49 demo, and also was number one in the 25-54 male demo.
It actually pretty much demolished ESPN's former record on April 4, 1996, where the first league game ever drew an average 1.1 million viewers.
The sports channel, via its ESPN2 unit, will feature the Los Angeles Galaxy, along with Beckham, in two matches in August and also in September. They have on lined up for October 18 as well.
