A just-released report from Datamonitor shows that the number of homes receiving digital TV services in the United States and Western Europe will grow to 165 million homes by 2012, says marketingcharts, citing the study. The current number of households receiving digital TV services stands at 105 million. That includes cable, satellite and IPTV services.
The increasing number of ways to consume video will put growing pressure on digital TV as consumers find the variety of options available to them. As broadband penetration and speed increases, all bets are off as to who the winners will be in about 7-10 years.
In the pay-TV space, IPTV is projected to have the most growth over the next five years, as by 2012 it will be in 19.3 million households, an annual compound
growth rate of 41.8 percent starting from 2006.
For satellite television, it is projected to be in 77.7 million homes across Western Europe and the United States by 2012.
