With the arrival of David and Victoria Beckham from Britain, the question comes to mind on whether anyone will remember about the soccer side of the deal, or if they'll even care.
All the buzz is generated by the arrival of the two celebrities, rather than anything to do with "saving" American soccer, which some believe Beckham was paid his enormous sum for. In reality, we find the sum was paid as more of a marketing expense, rather than any type of improvement to the sport in America.
It's very similar to bringing Pelé to America years ago toward the end of his career, where his name and notoriety weren't enough to really help much with expanding the soccer brand in the U.S.
What's pretty funny, is many in the L.A. scene don't even know who they really are, although everyone is talking about them.
I'm wondering if this is going to create the Katie Couric syndrome, where there is so much hype leading to the introduction, that anything done later could never live up to it.
Even the pre-hype hasn't lasted, as the original idea was for a six-week series showing the couples' every move during the process, which has been pared down to one show on NBC, with a Monday special called, "Coming To America: Victoria Beckham."
"The Beckhams' arrival is causing quite a stir with the media in LA but to be honest I think it will all die down very quickly," says Ellis Cashmore, author of Beckham.
"It's curiosity more than anything. I have friends in LA who want to know who on earth this pair are and why they're so huge across the globe. They're not quite sure what the fuss is all about with them, and football just isn't that big over there, so I think that they'll have a hard time staying as A-list as they've been used to. It won't be long before LA loses interest."
There will definitely be a downturn as the newness wears off. It's at that time we'll find out whether this will be something that holds, or is just another celebrity hiring that makes no impact on the sport itself.
More than likely the biggest winners in this will be the Beckham's themselves who've extended their brand beyond the European market. It gives them the potential for a lot of opportunities in the future.
For now, it's only a matter of time before American curiosity wains, then we'll start to see where things really stand.
