The rumors that Kevin Reilly may be heading to Fox (NWS-A) seem to be true, and it could end up being a strong match for the company and Reilly.
Some have questioned why Fox would grab Reilly with his record of not creating the types of shows that attract the masses; which is true.
On the other hand, he does have a reputation for creating high quality shows that are critically acclaimed. I usually cringe when I hear the words "critically acclaimed," as the first thing that comes to my mind is nobody's going to watch it. But in the case of Reilly and how his type of productions could fit in with the network and where it's at, it could be a great partnership.
For example, everyone knows the reality show strength of the Fox network, led by super powerhouse American Idol, and by lesser, but also successful shows like "Are you Smarter Than a Fifth Grader?" and "So You Think You Can Dance."
While they do have a couple of strong scripted shows like "24" and "House," overall it is still their weak spot.
Enter Reilly. Some of the shows he's delivered at other networks he's worked for are 30 Rock, The Shield, Nip/Tuck, Friday Night Lights, Heroes and The Office. If he is able to produce these types of shows for Fox, it could round out their overall TV scheduling and make them an even stronger powerhouse in the key 18-49 demo they lead in now.
"Fox is really in need of some good solid drama and comedy development," says Jack Myers, publisher of Media Business Reports, an industry newsletter. "[Reilly] would be a great compliment to the development team at Fox."
Another reason Reilly may work good for Fox, is they may not need as large as numbers as NBC (GE) did to consider their drama or comedy successful. They're definitely going after the 18-49 demo, and a lot of the shows Reilly has made definitely caters to that crowd.
This would probably be a really good move by Fox if they do it. Reilly may have to ease off the being acclaimed stuff, and work on good shows that draw a better audience, not great shows that may only appeal to a much smaller niche.
