National Amusements, which has been led by the creative Shari Redstone for years, has now added National CineMedia Inc. to its stable of content providers for the theater chain.
The chain has been offering live broadcasts of events since 2002, where in partnership with Broadway Theater Network offered its first show, a tape delayed broadcast of the play "Jekyll & Hyde." For the last three years they've added the Boston Red Sox baseball team to their theater-based broadcast venue.
“The idea that we have in our circuit, and I think others are following suit, is to provide an atmosphere that makes theaters a destination place for a variety of entertainment,” said William Towey, National Amusement’s senior vice president of operations. “Movies are definitely the mainstay of our business, but we want to make the movie-going event even more exciting and interesting.”
In the deal, National Amusements will provide broadcasts of live or prerecorded events like music concerts, opera and sporting related content.
They'll offer the service at 25 select theaters where the digital broadcasts will be shown.
If Shari Redstone ends up being bought out by he father, I think it'll be too bad for theater owners across the country, who could learn a lot from the numerous, creative ventures Shari had experimented with.
