The Al Gore And NBC Mating Dance

While the recent three-hour special on NBC (GE) which Al Gore called "the largest global entertainment event in all of human history," which very few bothered watching, was a study in how the Fairness Doctrine only applies one way, it also should have had the label of infomercial listed at the beginning and end of it.

The infomercial would be under the umbrella of General Electric, which is quietly in the background hoping all the hype about the alleged global warming catches on. If you knew some of the types of products GE has in the pipeline, you'd know what I'm saying is true. Things like the flourescent bulbs and wind turbines, among many other products the parent of NBC is sitting on the sidelines with.

As an article at CNNMoney said, citing Investors Daily, "When a conservative appears on talk radio, liberals cry for the Fairness Doctrine. Seventy-five free hours for Archbishop Gore's Church of Climate Change? Not a peep."

NBC ended up giving Gore 75 free hours of airtime throughout its various stations and channels.

In a hilarious response to Gore's goofy statement that if "The planet has a fever. If your baby has a fever, you go to the doctor," they said, "After Gore's testimony, a better course of action would have been to ask for a second opinion." The truth is that a second opinion has been offered, and a lot of media outlets refuse to let it be heard. There's for the most part a blackout on the thousands of scientists that have said the science behind the global warming fiasco is faulty. Where's the so-called Fairness Doctrine? Evidently hidden away in the closet until a liberal needs to come out of it.

While Al Gore may be strutting like and with the Peacock in their one-sided mating ritual, people are starting to see that there are a lot of vested interest by politicians and some big business for the global warming myth to be considered a reality.

No wonder nobody watches NBC anymore.

The truth is that scientists are still making discoveries regarding global warming and some of the data is inconclusive. It would be nice if the media actually provided balanced news but there is always a frame and often an agenda behind that frame. I guess its too much to ask to actually be able to make up our own minds about the information instead of being spoon fed one sided propaganda, regardless of what side it's coming from.

G'day Kimberlee,

I agree that the scientific community are making new advances into the mechanisms behind global warming every day, but unfortunately for all of us, those peer reviewed scientific papers back up what Al Gore is saying.

The only confusion on this topic is that which is broadcast by special interest groups in the media.

"The only confusion on this topic is that which is broadcast by special interest groups in the media."-- I agree almost completely, and as for any doubts, I just stash them in the "just to be on the safe side/just in case" compartment. Because what if it isn't a hoax, and we gamble that it is?

I wonder if Gary Bourgeault has children, because when he mocks Gore's analogy he seems a little cavalier, about both the health of children and the health of the planet. my kids are sick and I can't be sure it isn't something serious, I go to an expert called a pediatrician. I am not an MD and I defer to the opinions of MD's when it comes to my family's health--just to be on the safe side, just in case it's something that could cause irreversible harm or death to my dear children. This is not to say I let the pediatrician "spoon feed" me--by which I assume Kimberlee means "order me around while demanding I not think for myself." On the contrary I spend a lot of time reading up on health issues. But I never lose sight of the fact that I am not a health professional, and I always humbly remember that no amount of research, however avidly undertaken, is going to make me one
as long as I remain outside the schools and other institutions that train health professionals.

Similarly, I don't presume that I am a climate expert. No matter how much I read about environmental issues, I don't forget that I was an English major, for goodness' sake. But I have enough of a grasp on what science is (and is not) to respect the scientists and scientific institutions doing the real research. I feel I am able to think critically about what I read or hear on TV, and I am skeptical enough to remember that there is always "news behind the news." However, angry conspiracy theories about GE and Al Gore's ulterior motives are really the last resort of those who A) are too scared to admit that we should take his advice "just in case/just to be on the safe side" or B) all invested in petrochemicals themselves or C) so rigidly conservative/republican/pro-bush that they can't believe that liberal/democrat/environmentalist people might say something worthwhile.

"There's for the most part a blackout on the thousands of scientists that have said the science behind the global warming fiasco is faulty. " Where is your evidence? According to Gore, the news media tend to represent the global warming science as "faulty" or "controversial" 53% of the time, whereas in scientific publications (containing peer-reviewed research results) virtually no scientists have claimed there's any real doubt people cause global warming. Where are your "thousands of scientists"? Where, in fact, is the second opinion that you imply will disagree with the first?

If one of my children were dangerously ill without a precise diagnosis, would I withhold medical care until, following lengthy tests, that diagnosis was set in stone, or would I obtain treatments that might save her life? I would go with what my mother calls the "couldn't hurt, might help" approach. At the very least, even if drastic climate change is really not to be feared, many of the things recommended to avert it are simultaneously likely to result in cleaner air and water, to protect biodiversity, and to ensure a more peaceful geopolitical situation than the one we have now, in which peoples and nations are constantly fighting over scarce resources.

And, if Gary's "thousands of scientists" have kids, how are they going to explain themselves to their kids when/if it gets to the point where human effort cannot reverse human damage to the planet?

As Upton Sinclair, quoted by Gore, says, "It is very difficult to make a man understand something, if his job depends on his not understanding it."

And btw Gary how about Florida and California, with their Republican governors, buying into the climate crisis "hoax"?

I clicked on the link to this article by Gary already suspecting the tone to be set. I was not disappointed. I felt I had to respond when "Lo and Behold" I read Liz's rebuttal which said pretty much everything I would have and a lot more civilly than I would have. All I can now say is ......READ LIZ'S ANSWER!
