After consumers have pretty much rejected the high-end TiVo Series3 HD Digital Media Recorder, which was offered at a pricey $800, the company has now come back with a new version with less bells and whistles, which will be offered for $300.
The original version included features with higher quality video and audio. It seems it was more than users were asking for.
TiVo's (TIVO) new model will include 20 hours of high-definition recording versus the formers' 30 hours. The new version will include two tuners, so two shows can be recorded in HD while watching a third show that has been already recorded.
The device will also include two built-in slots where you can use CableCARD, so the user can access digital programming without the need of another device from a cable provider.
All of this is TiVo's battle to not become a commodity in the minds of consumers, which would probably spell the end of the company. as cable and satellite providers offer the set-top boxes for free.
At this time the company does offer services Internet and home networking, which offer it some distinction. The question becomes if it matters that much to consumers.
With the low-end being taken up by their competitors, it does make you wonder where TiVo will go if consumers reject the premium products they're attempting to get them interested in.
The new version will be for sale beginning in early August.
