Transformers has been able to do so far, what other big name releases haven't this year, they've managed to stay strong for its first week. It's a little different to measure against the others because of their waiting until Monday to release it. Still, for the weekend it took the No. 1 spot with a strong take of $67.6 million.
Overall, Paramount (VIA-B) did everything pretty much right on its marketing and releases dates, maximizing everything to its fullest potential by taking advantage of the holiday week. If they had did it any different, they probably wouldn't have scored as strong as they have.
This brings transformers numbers so far to $152.5 million, one of the strongest weeks in box office history, and you can be sure the Paramount will continue to remind people of that fact.
Ratatouille, as expected, has also maintained a strong place in the field, as it dropped only by 38 percent from its opening weekend, to take the second-place spot with another solid $29 million. They needed to hold strong after a somewhat disappointing opening of $47 million.
Bringing up the third spot is the Bruce Willis film "Live Free Or Die Hard," which with the strong holiday box office was able to gleen some of that and bring in a decent $17.4 million its second time around. It's now reached $84.2 million, a lot of that coming from some strong weekday performances.
The one thing that Hollywood has to be happy with this weekend is the holding power of the top batch of movies. The blockbusters so far this year haven't been able to hold after their strong opening performances. The industry needs a great second half if it's going to perform like they promised it would. They'll have to almost close out the season with this type of holding power to make it happen.
