The next film in the ongoing Star Trek franchise will include two actors playing Mr. Spock, according to J.J. Abrams, who's heading up the project. It's been over five years since the last film in the series, and with no new TV series in the making, it should feed some pent up demand.
The character of Spock will include a younger and older version, with "Heroes" star Zachary Quinto playing the young version and none other than Leonard Nimoy playing the older version.
Responding to why he's reprising his role in the film, Nimoy said, "People have been asking me why I'm doing this movie, and I think the answer is obvious—we have a great director, a wonderful script, and a wonderful young actor playing Spock, so…it was logical."
Nimoy hasn't played the role of Spock on the big screen since the release of Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country in 1991. The setting for the film will be before the days of the "Wrath of Khan."
Abrams added that since they're going back to the beginning, they're trying to find a place to fit in William Shatner to play the aged Captain Kirk. The role of the younger Kirk hasn't been cast yet.
Scripting the project are Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman. Shooting begins in November, with released scheduled for Christmas Day 2008.
