For the most part, this weekend has given film fans a breather from the continuous action movies brought out weekend after weekend. With the debut of "I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry" and "Hairspray," the weekend gave filmgoers a chance to take a brief rest from the genre.
This weekends box office is so tight, that the top three finishers could easily be reshuffled and changed when the final numbers come in Monday.
At this time, "I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry" is projected to take the NO. 1 spot for the weekend, with an estimated take of $34.7 million. The Adam Sandler/Kevin James comedy probably won't be around too long. It'll drop big time next weekend.
"Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix" is right behind "I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry," and could overtake them as I mentioned. For now, it's expected it'll finish with $32.2 million, dropping 58% from its opening weekend, continuing with the pattern for blockbusters this summer.
"Hairspray," which opened to great reviews, is unlikely to hold strong next weekend either; although the respectable showing in its debut of $27.8 million should help them do ok over the long haul.
