The Bourne franchise just seems to keep on gathering more interest from movie fans as it has increased its opening weekend take for each movie. The Bourne Ultimatum took first for the weekend easily, bringing in a strong $70.2 million. The first film of the series, "The Bourne Identity" earned $27.1 million for its opener, while the second installment, "The Bourne Supremacy" earned $52.5 million for its opening weekend.
Bourne also broke a record as it became the biggest August opening in history, beating out Rush Hour 2, which opened with $67.4 million. This will become Matt Damon's second $100 million plus film for the summer, with Ocean's Thirteen earning around $115 million domestically.
While "The Simpsons Movie" came in second for the weekend, it plunged to $25.6 million, a huge drop of 65% from its $74.1 million opener. This isn't surprising to me because of the faddishness of the movie, but Fox (NWS-A) won't be too concerned as it only cost $65 million to make, and has already crossed the $100 million mark domestically.
Disney's family offering of the cartoon character "Underdog" brought up the No. 3 position this weekend, opening at $12 million. This should make Disney (DIS) happy as it doesn't look like they had to spend a lot on this movie.
