A fire has destroyed the set of the HBO series "Rome" at the well-known Cinecitta film studios. Reportedly no one was injured in the blaze.
The fire burned a large swath of the set, as it engulfed 32,000 square feet before firefighters got it under control. The overall Cinecitta complex covers 717,000 square yards.
It took firefighters, which numbered in the dozens, three hours to extinquish the fire. The portion of the set which burned had a lot of highly fammable material on the grounds. Arson has been ruled out as a cause.
The studio, which has been around for 70 years, includes the sets for big name productions like "Ben-Her" and "Quo Vadis." There have been around 1,000 productions at the famous complex.
Interestingly, Italian dictator Benito Mussolini built the complex in 1937 at the southern outskirts of Rome.
